Everything vanished

Hi–Newbie here: new to list, fairly new to iPod.
I got a new Classic iPod in early December. I took one of my music CDs and put it into iTunes and copied it onto my iPod. Worked great.
Then I took two books on CD, loaded them into playlists in iTunes and transferred them to my iPod. Worded great.
Then I put my iPod in its box, locked it into my desk, and left work for 2 weeks (I was at home, so I didn’t plan to listen to my iPod).
I returned to work, took out my iPod, and there is nothing on it. Nothing. No music. No playlists. The battery is charged. When I connect it to my computer and open iTunes, it shows that there is nothing there.
Meanwhile, I’ve copied the files of two more books on CD into iTunes as playlists.
I sync everything from my iTunes library to my iPod and nothing gets transferred/copied. iTunes says it syncs and then says there was an error transferring over 100 files because they “could not be found.”
I have iTunes 8, Windows XP, 120 G iPod Classic. Can anyone give me any advice as to why this isn’t working? Did something (everything?) *expire* at the end of 2008?????
